About MSI

Our History

Machine Specialties, Inc. — or MSI for short — has been manufacturing precision parts since 1969. We are a leading contract machining and metal finishing specialist that designs and manufactures sophisticated, cost-effective solutions to your most demanding challenges.

Our business philosophy is simple. We manufacture precision-made parts, deliver them to customers faster than anyone else, and back them up with a company-wide commitment to service. This philosophy of quality and service has helped fuel our growth.

Our first expansion took place in 1978, when we increased to 7,500 square feet. We expanded several times since then, and our relocation into our larger facility in the Rock Creek Center in Whitsett, NC, gives us more than 150,000 square feet to work with. Our last expansion tripled our space, which means MSI now offers more special processes, more assemblies, and more engineering services than before. It also means that MSI can now meet your large-part needs.

We believe in going beyond product quality to deliver product precision. We use cutting-edge CAD/CAM technology to create exact duplicates of your designs without interpretation. Then, we produce and finish them in our climate-controlled facility.

Speed-to-delivery is critical to today's Just-In-Time manufacturers. Our technology and processing advantages mean you get your parts faster — often weeks faster than our competitors.

MSI offers dedicated capacity for new products to reduce the development-to-market cycle, state-of-the-art technology and equipment for quick turns, and internal metal finishing capabilities for shorter turn times.

MSI is there when it comes to meeting the needs of the Aerospace, Commercial, Military, Medical, and Energy sectors.

Quality

Our Quality department is staffed by quality engineers who monitor every process and every step to ensure that MSI meets and exceeds the specifications to build quality into every part.

Our QA program is certified to the latest revision of ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and AS 9100, and has built-in provisions to accommodate our customers' individual needs. Consequently, all measuring tools are calibrated on a schedule and their accuracy is traceable to the National Institute for Standards and Technology.

We expedite the manufacturing process by keeping customer specific programs on file. This makes placing and/or modifying subsequent orders quick and easy. In our lab, MSI programmers use industry-leading CAD/CAM programs to import data from our customers' systems to generate CNC machine tool programs for the manufacturing process.

The quality management system for Machine Specialties, Inc. is compliant to the requirements of AS 9100 and ISO 9001. Machine Specialties, Inc. is NADCAP-approved in Chemical Processing and Non-destructive Testing.

Contract Engineering Services

MSI offers contract engineering services to customers who want to perform in-house machining, but want additional expertise or resources to develop the required processes on their own.

MSI offers any of the following services individually, or you can combine them into a customized turnkey package that meets your specific needs:

  • Bills of Materials
  • Bills of Operations
  • CNC Programs
  • Tooling Packages
  • Work Holding Fixtures
  • Machine-tool recommendations
  • Machine set-up services
Additional Contract Services

In addition to our contract engineering services, MSI can also offer the following on a contract basis:

  • Contract inspection services, including First Article Inspection Reports, Limited Quantity Inspection Reports and CMM-based Geometric Form and Position Plots
  • Reverse engineering services – MSI can prepare technical drawings and documentation based on the measurement and analysis of previously manufactured parts or assemblies
  • Measurement of components and assemblies
  • Metallurgical & materials analysis
  • 3D models and detail drawings, including bill of materials, full description of geometry and required finish call-outs
  • Design for manufacturability analysis, including reviews of legacy parts or new designs
  • Cost reduction analysis based on current machined parts design
Competitive Quantities
  • Any time top quality and/or close tolerances are required
  • 15–10,000 piece lot sizes
  • More than 10,000 piece lot sizes depending on the part
  • Less than 15 piece lot sizes if:
  • The order precedes a production run
  • The order will be repeated
  • The part requires substantial amounts of machining
  • Tooling, singles, and prototypes depending on the individual situation
Lead Times
  • 4 weeks or less if the machine time is available
  • 4–8 weeks for standard lead time orders
  • Under 4 weeks for small quantities, tooling, or special situations
  • Lead times are from receipt of order. The required lead time is influenced by the following factors:
  • Previously contracted work load on the required machines at the time an order is placed
  • The delivery lead time of the required raw materials
  • The actual required machining time
  • The time required for any outside processing requirements
  • The needs of the customer
  • The flexibility of our other customers' delivery dates
Materials
  • All common manufacturing metals except cast iron and graphite (we do make rare exceptions)
  • Most exotic materials such as Titanium, Inconel, Monel, and Kovar
  • Plastics and Phenolics
  • Virtually any raw material form, including castings, forgings, bar stock, ingots, and plate stock
Metal Finishing
Aluminum Anodizing
Chromic Type I A, Sulfuric Type II, and Hard Coat Type III to MIL-A-8625 as well as customer-specific requirements.
We also offer Dying (colors), Sealing (Nickel Acetate, Dicromate, and Hot Water), Chemical Coating, and Neutralization.
